THE SLATE TYPE:

RIVEN

Riven slate has a surface that is quite flat but has not been flattened and polished with a diamond tool like the cheaper honed slate. Riven slate sizes are from (10m x 10cm) to large signs (120cm x 60cm).
The surface is not rough, it is very similar to a roofing slate to the touch. The worked slate is again protected.  Riven slate is available in a thickness of 1.5cm.

INFORMATION

At Slate Signs & Designs we produce high quality slate products at very competitive prices, we can do this because we have invested in the latest technology. We do not shot blast our products but emulate the traditional way of "V" cutting the stone that enables us to produce a superior product with both Single or Double stroke fonts along with any artwork of your choice.
THERE ARE TWO RIVEN COLOURS AVAILABLE THEY ARE :
MEDIUM GREY
Green - grey slate available in a riven finish.
DARK SLATE
External dark grey, almost black slate, available in a riven finish.

Slate is a natural product with slight variation in colours, when pairs of signs are ordered they are commonly cut from the same slab to provide a close colour and texture match.

Below is a list of our most popular fonts. But if you would like to choose a
font of your own for that special touch just let us know.

Screw Fixings
Small and medium signs are normally secured to a wall using brass or stainless steel screws supplied. Ordinary steel or steel plated/galvanised screws are unsuitable and will deteriorate and damage the slate over time, they should never be used.
For extra security, a removable bond can be applied to the back of the sign to prevent the sign being removed by just undoing the screws.

Instructions for applying and removing a "security  bond" are provided with the sign. (uses an inexpensive builders product from your local DIY shop)

Secret Fixings
Alternatively our slate signs can be bonded to a non porous wall using modern adhesives without the need for screws. Small signs can have a locating pin bonded into the back of the sign, this pin is used to position the sign prior to fixing on the wall. The  bonding agent is applied to the back of the sign before fixing. The sign is set level and light pressure applied.
Large signs can be similarly fixed using a number of locators, the wall is pre-drilled using the template supplied.

Standard brass countersunk screw fixing method normally using 2 or 4 screws, suitable for small and medium sized signs.
Threaded brass insert bonded into the back of a slate, a template is used to ensure the receiving holes are set in the correct position.
SINGLE  STROKE
DOUBLE STROKE
Bookman old style text, single stroke, with gold inlay on dark slate.
Copper plate text, double stroke, with gold inlay on medium grey slate.

Slate and stone signs are dense materials and signs can be quite heavy.
